Let's Talk: Anxiety

Anxiety is having intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. This can interfere with daily activities. I personally have dealt with anxiety especially before a big exam or presentation. I want to make sure I get the best grades and I have to reread my work multiple times because I think one sentence isn't right. I would rewrite one word in my notes because I wrote one letter in a different way than usual and it would stress me out. Sometimes I would just think of one situation over and over, or the "what ifs" of a situation so much I would hyperventilate and cry.

It takes a lot of work to get out of your own head but here are a few things I found that have helped me:

  1. The 5 Senses Method: You look around the room you are in and say three things you can touch, three things you can see, three things you can hear, three foods you wish you had, and three of your favorite smells. This really helped bring me back to reality.

  2. Focusing on my breathing: this is a little harder than the first option but it really is helpful. You have to think of taking a big breath in, holding it for ten seconds, and letting go. Repeat this process to help calm the nerves.

  3. If possible, go out and get fresh air! This can help clear you mind when you are in an open environment. Going for a small walk can help distract your mind.

There are professional treatment options, so do not be afraid to reach out if needed.
