Let's Talk: Depression

What is depression? According to the Mayo Clinic, depression is a mood disorder caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain which causes people to feel a persistent sadness and loss of interest. Depression symptoms may be different for everyone. Symptoms can include sadness, irritability, poor performance and attendance at school, anxiety, extremely sensitive, sleeping an excessive amount and so much more.

It is important to recognize, that YES, everyone has bad days sometimes but there shouldn't be bad days everyday. So, you may be wondering, what can I do to help? Whether you need the help, someone you know, or you are just curious, here are a few things to help:

  1. Get professional help. If you or someone you know is constantly having these feelings suggest professional help. Do not push them because it could make them feel confined. Just be supportive!

  2. Reach out to family and friends. Check in on the people you love. People battling depression tend to keep their feelings locked up because they don't want to feel like they are a burden to anyone. Show up for them, reassure them that you do truly care.

  3. Find healthy coping mechanisms! Set goals for yourself, it may be hard to have motivation to do anything but little goals are still victories. Exercise - it doesn't have to be heavy lifting, just go for a walk! Getting fresh air can help you clear your mind. Get a routine for yourself - go to bed at the same time, set an alarm and get up and accomplish you goals.

  4. Remember you are NOT alone! It's helpful to write down things you are grateful for every day - start with three or five. Writing down what you are grateful for reminds you of the positives in life.

Remember, it is okay to ask for help. It takes a lot of courage and you can do it.

If you are feeling like you are going to self harm please call 911 or the suicide hotline number: 1-800-273-8255.

You are loved. You are wanted. You are needed. You are incredible.
